What is a split digraph?

Sound Waves Spelling 7/9/15

“teacher-at-desk-using-laptop“ A split digraph is when one sound splits the aeio, or u and the final e. For example, stage has a split digraph but not change.

The split digraphs are a_e (cake), e_e (these), i_e (ice), o_e (rose), and u_e (flute).

Teaching tip: Use the Segmenting Tool in the Sound Waves Teaching Resources to model split digraphs for Focus and Extension Words. The projectable segmented answers also illustrate when a split digraph is present.
